site updates – updated CMS software, and URL aliases

here’s one for the geeks in the audience (sorry, mom & mom-in-law).

i’ve recently updated my site to the latest stable release of my content management system, and discovered functionality (that’s existed in it for quite some time) to alias the big ugly URLs i was previously using, down to nice quick ones.

for example:

this url: /taxonomy/term/2/all is now represented simply as: /travel

probably doesn’t mean a hill of beans to anyone but me, but i think it’s fun. and it should help google to classify my content as well.

and i don't even care, to shake these zipper blues

And I dont even care to shake these zipper blues
And we dont know
Just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed
into the earth below

back to my old style: musical reference & summary of recent activities (office project, brewing, house project, cats). who’s that on the iPod?

nora & me

i know, i don’t post many pictures of myself. i’m humble, that way. to appease those who don’t like this policy – here’s a few shots with my girl-kitty, nora.

no hi-res versions. more therapy is needed, first.

what's in an outlet?

picture of the wall where the outlet will be mounted
so, i had a conversation with someone, trying to explain what i had to do with the outlets in the office (and formerly, in the bedroom).

here’s a story, in pictures. i didn’t get the BEFORE shot, but imagine the outlet box screwed to the tongue&groove boards inside that hole. (forgive the lack of focus on the first shot — i can’t go back and re-create it now!)

experimenting with comments

this morning you may have seen links to post comments on articles. i’m experimenting with the comment module in my site software. i’ve since turned it back off for a while; my design template doesn’t display it too well so i’ll need to tweak that over the weekend.

i plan to enable moderated comments first, and we’ll see how that goes. after which i may allow anonymous comments.

my fear though is that folks looking to spam or otherwise post inappropriate content might find this blog and go to town. this is obviously unacceptable (both my mom and my mother-in-law read this — hi moms!) so moderation will probably be the rule for a while.

office project begins

picture of the office

it begins again. it seems every late january/early february, we’re hanging drywall.

last year it was our bedroom project which went quite well. only too slowly, as we chose to strip off the horrible old felt paper & wallpaper before applying drywall to the plank walls.

this time, we’re leaving said wall coverings in place and drywalling over them. weird, yes. but – we’ve already got 4 sheets up, and we should be ready to mud by the end of the weekend.

the bedroom, we didn’t finish until st patricks day or so. this one, we’re aiming to be complete on presidents day.

the wood (superficial wainscoting applied over the wallpaper layer) looks nice in the picture, but it’s actually very rough, and it… smells. like that old house smell times ten. when we tore it down, it actually got better because then we were smelling the nice, unfinished wood on the back.

more info and pictures as the project progresses. the plan:

  • finish drywall
  • tape & mud
  • crown moulding
  • prime & paint
  • floating floor – laminate
  • new thermostat & baseboard heater
